In this issue we are talking about setting goals for the summer. In light of the topic I have decided to share one of my goals with you. On June 10, 2007 I will be riding in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure in Reston, VA. My goal is to ride 63 miles in one day! I choose this race because I have so many patients that have been diagnosed with Diabetes. I want to show support to all those patients I work with and help to achieve normal blood sugars. This is an illness that can ABSOLUTELY benefit from the lifestyle and nutritional support we provide at Healthydaes! The most I have ridden in a day has been 20 miles. I have never ridden 63 miles before so this is a stretch for me. Just as I ask my patients to stretch outside their current habits and make a commitment to a health goal that might seem a little out of their reach. As a naturopathic physician, I feel that it is important for me to practice what I preach to my patients. I am sharing this with all of you to share with you a little more about what I do in my life to stay healthy. I hope this will inspire others to find a health goal in 2007. There is nothing better for the soul than success of a personal dream or goal! I want to give a special acknowledgement to my brother for buying me a bike for my birthday a couple of years ago. Without his support I would not be able to ride and enjoy nature as part of my health regimen. The ADA is asking for each rider to raise $175.00 for the ride.

Hearty barley casserole

This is a great hearty side dish that goes well with fish, poultry or meat. It is a great way to add vegetables to your meal.

Ingredients
3 cups vegetable stock
1 cup pearled barley
3 scallions, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Preparation
In a medium saucepan, heat the stock to boiling over high heat. Add the barley, reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook until tender, about 50 minutes. Drain and place in a large bowl. In a medium skillet, heat a few tablespoons. of vegetable stock over medium heat. Add the scallions and celery and cook until the celery is crisp-tender, 5-6 minutes. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper and cook until the vegetables are soft and most of the liquid from the mushrooms has evaporated, about 5 minutes. Stir the cooked vegetables into the barley. Mix well. Serve hot or cold.
Tip For the month – How To Really Release Weight In March JAMA – Journal of American Medical Association, released a study on weight loss comparing popular diets. The participants were overweight premenopausal women. The basic results of the study concluded that women lost an average of 6-12 pounds after a year on the programs. This study did not have any definitive conclusions about which diet is the best for weight release and maintenance. The keys that I want to share with you are that the diets basically reduce refine carbohydrates – pasta, cookies, rice, cakes, bread staples of the SAD – standard American diet and people lost weight. All diets increased complex carbohydrates and good forms of protein along with appropriate portion sizes. I think the most important lesson from the study is that as the women stopped practicing good eating habits, the more weight came back.. High blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol were all reduced as women lost weight and kept it off during the year of the study. My take home message is you must commit to a healthy eating style in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle and weight! It is not about the quick fix, it is about creating healthy patterns that work in your life and sticking to them. Our staff is here is to support you in creating those behaviors and creating a healthy life. Call the office today for a consultation.
46 year old female wanted to improve nutrition and lose weight Dr. Daemon's program is the perfect option for me. Again, I believe I mentioned to you that I had no idea what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat. Others would give me a list of food to eat, I would follow it but eat way too much. They say that you can have fruit, but not all fruit yields success at losing weight. Dr. Daemon's program spells all that out for you, even thou' you have to measure your food, it provides you with a structured plan of action. She educates you around what is happening with your body (blood sugar level) in conjunction with what you eat. It is so enlightening. It didn't come together for me when I was getting information from other sources about dieting, but when Dr. Daemon explains it, I completely understand what's going on with my body with the food I eat. I'm down seven pounds and feel much better. I even got a compliment today. Its hard, no doubt about it. But, this is the first time I've ever felt that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel with weight loss. I'm not floundering out there without a clue anymore.

We are always listening to your comments. We have received some feedback from some of our patients that would like to join some of our classes but are unable to make it to the office after work. We have heard your requests and decided to teach teleclasses so you can benefit from our programs from your home. Healthydaes will host it’s first teleclass Monday, April 9, 2007. The topic of the class is “Conquer Your Goals” Teleseminar. This 1 hour seminar is ideal for any of our weight management patients who are focused on creating a brand new healthy body. This class will also benefit any of our patients who want to achieve any of their health related goals for exercise, time management, and stress management. Remember health is a state of mind, it affects more than the physical body. Use this seminar to support your goals of creating a work life balance, financial milestone or quiet time for yourself each week. The moderator for our call is Che Brown of Partners in Learning. Che is an executive and personal coach. He wants to help teach each one of you how to achieve and supersede your goals. We are proud to have him share his knowledge with us.
